About ASU

Established in 2003 by Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium and Southcentral Foundation, our mission is to support our tribal health partners with various healthcare and clinical system issues in the ASU. ASU-OS reports to the Village Service Management Team and the Anchorage Service Unit Tribal Health Council. ASU-OS is housed in Medical Services Administration, Anchorage Native Primary Care Center.

Work Goals

Family Medicine Clinic, Women's Health Clinic, Dental, Optometry, Pharmacy, Specialty Clinics, Contract Health, Travel, ANMC/ANTHC IT departments, and the Medical Staff Office all have an important and active role in achieving our mission to extend quality heath care to rural and distant villages in the ASU. ASU-OS work goals are focused around protocols and standards; quality assurance/process improvement; regular meetings; compliance; midlevel staff; roles and responsibilities of clinical staff; medication management; customer service, community health aides, and overall general problem solving for rural primary care and service delivery issues.

Tribal Health Partners and Geographical Area

There are 18 tribal health organizations in the ASU. Eleven of the organizations (Chickaloon, Chitina, Eklutna, Eyak, Karluk, Kenaitze, Knik, Ninilchik, Seldovia, Tyonek, and Valdez) are independent unaffiliated tribal health programs. Seven of the organizations (Aleutian Pribilof Islands Association, Bristol Bay Area Health Corporation, Chugachmiut, Copper River Native Association, Eastern Aleutian Tribes, Kodiak Area Native Association, and Mount Sanford Tribal Consortium) are affiliated with surrounding villages in their regions and collectively represent nearly 90 villages and 36 village clinics. The ASU geographical area extends 108,000 square miles across southcentral Alaska from the Canadian border to the end of the Aleutian Islands. According to the 2000 census, the ASU native population and non-native population is estimated at around 10,000 and 35,000 people respectively.
