The Audiology Department is responsible for a wide variety of services related to hearing. It works closely with the Ear–Nose–Throat Department at the Alaska Native Medical Center, from which it receives many of its customer referrals.

One of the department’s primary services is the testing of hearing, and it provides this service for people of all ages, from newborn to geriatric. Among the different testing methods used by the audiologists in the department are:

  • Pure tone threshold
  • Speech audiometric
  • Oto-acoustic emissions
  • Brainstem evoked response

Other services offered by the department include the following:

  • Cochlear implant program: pre- and post-fitting and adjusting for children and adults.
  • Employee monitoring: for SCF employees who work in high-decibel environments. Monitoring of hearing thresholds over time; provision of custom-fitted earplugs, if needed.
  • Fitting of hearing aids and assisted hearing devices; hearing aid sales.
  • Annual screening for children attending Head Start.

Customers are often referred to the Audiology Department by their health care providers or by another clinic, such as ENT. However, customers can also make direct appointments themselves.
