Alaska Women’s Recovery Project (AWRP) provides community-based, peer-driven and peer-led recovery support for women whose lives have been disrupted by alcoholism, drug addiction and co-occurring mental health disorders. AWRP serves approximately 350 women and their families each year in the Anchorage area, and the participants represent all ages, ethnic backgrounds and stages of recovery.

AWRP participants come together from all over the community. Most women learn of the recovery support services from printed information or at in-person presentations. Settings where they might hear about AWRP include residential and outpatient treatment centers, correctional centers, homeless and domestic violence shelters, and the therapeutic court system.

Through these networks, AWRP has become increasingly well known, and women often contact the Project when they transition back into the community. Once they become involved, they are encouraged to become peer-leaders themselves. Peer-led support is based on the principle that competence and wisdom reside in those who have actually lived the addiction/recovery experience themselves.

As participants assume supporter and leadership roles, they receive extensive training to develop their skills. AWRP peer leaders become advocates to raise awareness about treatment and recovery, and challenge the stigma associated with addiction.

Building on its six years of success, AWRP is currently developing a Recovery Community Center, staffed primarily by peers, which will provide a clean, sober, healing environment for recovering women to gather in. Aside from housing informational resources, this facility will make possible a whole new roster of activities for recovering women, including:

Alaska Women's Recovery Projcet
  • Weekly support gatherings
  • Family strengthening activities
  • Skill building workshops
  • Peer leadership development and training
  • Community education on addiction and recovery
  • Clothing closet

AWRP’s only requirement is that its participants be sober and respectful. AWRP activities are based upon the principle of overall wellness, not abstinence alone. Women build upon their strengths to live well in the community.
